Schistosoma Worms

752px-schistosomiasis_life_cycle

Human parasites are still a very real danger in developing countries.  Over 200 million people worldwide are thought to be infected with Schistosoma worms which can cause horrible illness and horrendous health problems.  Alan Fenwick, Professor of Tropical Parasitology, talks here about what makes the worms so dangerous and yet interesting at the same time.

Please txt in to donate a small amount of money to help Prof. Fenwick and all at the Schistosomiasis Control Initiative eliminate these worms from the planet.  You can text 700 70 followed by WORM 22 and the amount of money you'd like to give (UK only).

Alternatively please visit their website to see the great work they do: http://www.imperial.ac.uk/schisto

Tomorrow's Tentacles 09

In this week's edition, Ed plays us some of the audio recordings he made during the recent London riots in Hackney. With his flat building wedged in the middle of the disorder, we listen to some of the chaos that enfolded as the night progressed.

We also play Nelida Pohl's 'Steam Fusion' - an imaginative piece of radio infused with the mechanical soundscapes associated with steam power and nuclear fusion. In this piece she explores the transition from past to present through the perspective of two characters, both united by their love for the sound of the machine.

We also play Carl Sagan's 'pale blue dot' - providing reflection upon our place within the universe, words which still resonate strongly, particularly in light of recent events.
